She was born on August 7, 1975, in Benoni, a city in the greater Johannesburg region of South Africa, to Charlize Aletta Theron and her parents. German is her mother's native language; French is the native language of her father, Charles, who died when she was young (she was named after him).
Charlize started her modelling career in 1991, when she was sixteen years old and won a local modelling competition. She began modelling in Europe and relocated to New York City a year after that. Though she disliked being a model, she chose to try her hand at ballet, which had been her greatest interest since she was a youngster. She was unsuccessful. Unfortunately, a knee ailment stopped her from participating in the dance competition. Charlize's mother purchased her a one-way ticket to Los Angeles in 1994, and she immediately began contacting all of the agencies on Hollywood Boulevard, but she was unsuccessful. She went to the bank to cash a check for $500 that she had received from her mother, and she became enraged when she discovered that the bank would not cash her check because it was written on a check from out of state.
Her antics drew the attention of an agent, who handed her his card in return for her agreeing to learn the language, which she accomplished by watching soap operas on television. Her first part was as a young mother in a park in a B-movie in 1995, but it was a non-speaking role with just three seconds of screen time.
