On November 17, 1978, in London, Ontario, Canada, Rachel Anne McAdams was born into a family of nurses to Sandra Kay (Gale) and Lance Frederick McAdams, who worked as a truck driver and furniture mover. She is descended from people of English, Welsh, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. She went on to get an honors BFA in Theater from York University, where she graduated with distinction. After making her television debut in an episode of Disney's The Famous Jett Jackson (1998), she went on to co-star in the Canadian television series Slings and Arrows (2003), a comedy-drama about the trials and tribulations of a Shakespearean theatre group, for which she was nominated for a Gemini award in 2003.

When she landed the part of Regina George in the smash blockbuster comedy Mean Girls (2004), she was suddenly elevated to the top of the list of Hollywood's most desirable young actresses. Immediately thereafter, she starred with Ryan Gosling in the critically acclaimed adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel The Notebook (2004), which was a surprise box-office hit and quickly established itself as the go-to romantic drama for a new, younger generation of viewers. Following the completion of production, McAdams and Gosling began dating and were together until the middle of 2007. With the manic comedy Wedding Crashers (2005), the thriller Red Eye (2005), and the Christmas drama The Family Stone (2007), McAdams demonstrated her flexibility onscreen over the next few years (2005).

Following her roles in Morning Glory (2010) and Midnight in Paris (2011), McAdams returned to romantic drama territory in The Vow (2012), in which she co-starred with Channing Tatum as a plucky producer of a failing morning television show. McAdams has also appeared in a number of other films, including the hit film The Vow (2012) with Channing Tatum. Additionally, she co-stars with Ben Affleck in Terrence Malick's To the Wonder (2012) and co-stars with Noomi Rapace in Brian De Palma's thriller Passion (2013), among other films (2012).

She got the "Supporting Actress of the Year" award from ShoWest in 2005, as well as the "Breakthrough Actress of the Year" award from the Hollywood Film Awards the same year.
